Cowboys Guard Rob Jones Breaks Neck Bone, Out Up to 3 Months

Dallas Cowboys guard Rob Jones will miss about two to three months after breaking a bone in his neck during the team’s first padded practice of training camp, a new report from the team shows.

Jones, 26, told the team’s website Monday that he got hurt early in Sunday’s practice in California but was still able to finish the session.

The injury is a tough break for the four-year veteran, who had been working with the starters on the offensive line. Jones signed a one-year, $3.75 million contract with Dallas in the offseason to add depth at guard, NBC News said.

"It happened right at the first," Jones told the team's website.

His absence could clear the way for rookie first-round pick Tyler Booker to start. Coaches were already impressed with Booker, and he was expected to compete for a starting job even before the injury, the team said.

Jones began his NFL career with the Miami Dolphins as an undrafted free agent. He started all 17 games last season and has 30 career starts over four years.

The Cowboys still have other experienced players who can step in. Saahdiq Charles, who spent four seasons in Washington, joined the team this offseason.

Brock Hoffman also has starting experience. He filled in for Zack Martin last season. Martin retired earlier this year.
